Rethinking

I ran into issues with the limitations of our laser cutter. For the Bed Backboard, I envisioned metal and the cutter can't cut metal (or ours can't cut metal). For the Lamp, The piece I would cut wouldn't be able to be done in one piece.

SO, on a compromise of the two I would like to do a light box. Using a piece of plexi, I will cut out a favorite lyric then create a box to put it in. Then create a light with in the box

  1. This works much better for the scale that our laser cutter works at, although if you still wanted to do the bed piece, you could make it modular. It will be interesting to see what you do to the surface of the plex, whether painting, scratching, etc. to give it a finish to give the light box an intriguing depth to it.

  2. I think this could be a great exploration of the potential of the laser cutter, however, I would challenge yourself more and incorporate more than just text. Come up with a complex design to carve into the plexi or maybe you can cut a design into the box as well (creating layers of light and shadow).

  3. I think it could be interesting for you to play with the different colors of plexi, or even use a more opaque material to contrast it's translucence. By using more than one material and integrating them it could make it a more dynamic light box. Also, if you are going to use a lyric, trying different fonts on the different materials would be a good experiment.
